We have been having a discussion on the term Adult/Child play. We are all understanding what it means in practise but are wondering at the actual wording. Does anyone know if the term 'adult/child play' came directly from Lili and if so where is the reference to it. Or is it just a language interpretation of the interaction and activity. We looked at page 19 in the FIELa where Lili describes' Adult/ child activities.' as well as 'Child self activities' We are discussing in terms of senior students who are actively engaging in Active Learning. Any thoughts would be welcome.

I don't know the answer to that question, but Lilli does talk a lot about the adult and child playing together. I was just looking at the book Educational Approaches which is a collection of her essays. There she discusses play-therapy and her approach to working with children in the 1960s and 1970s. I would like to hear more about what you are discussing and how it relates to older students.

What we were discussing regarding Adult/Child play is when we are writing official reports for senior students. Where even though adults do refer to themselves as 'playing' when the go off to golf or doing some experimental artistic work it may be seen in a different context. I am finding this difficult to write as I am playing the 'devil's advocate' in trying to get discussion to help us find ways to justify continuing with this term if other places use it and have no trouble. We seem to have moved on from the discussion and the term adult /child play is still in use. I will let you know if we develop any other ideas through further discussion

Kathryn, I know that we are also trying to be mindful of age appropriate terminology in the US as well. However, play is not limited to children. Still one thing that I find myself saying often about the adult-child activities is "Adult-Child Interaction".
